China Raises Tsunami Alarm After Kamchatka Earthquake
(MENAFN) A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula prompted China to issue tsunami warnings for select coastal zones on Wednesday, state-run media revealed.
According to media, the Ministry of Natural Resources activated a yellow-level tsunami alert for certain regions.
Authorities predict tsunami waves could arrive along Shanghai’s coastline by evening, with wave heights expected to peak at 30 centimeters.
Taiwan has also raised a tsunami watch, with the Central Weather Administration cautioning that waves might reach its shores by 1:18 p.m. (0518 GMT).
In the Philippines, officials advised residents living along Pacific-facing coasts to prepare for tsunami waves measuring less than one meter.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that the 8.8 magnitude quake triggered tsunami warnings throughout the Pacific basin.
The quake’s epicenter was pinpointed 119 kilometers (73.9 miles) east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a depth of 20.7 kilometers (12.8 miles), the USGS reported.
